The golf driver is a crucial club in any golfer’s arsenal, often setting the tone for your performance on par 4s and par 5s. It’s the club designed to maximize your distance off the tee, making it essential to choose one that complements your swing and skill level. With various factors to consider—such as loft, shaft flex, and weight distribution—selecting the right driver can be overwhelming, especially for beginners. This guide is crafted for those new to the game, offering a simplified overview. For the more seasoned players, stay tuned for an in-depth analysis coming soon on our blog. Let’s explore the key aspects to keep in mind when choosing your first golf driver.
Loft
Loft refers to the angle of the clubface, which impacts how high your ball will travel. Driver lofts typically range between 8 and 13.5 degrees, with higher lofts producing higher trajectories. The most common lofts are 9 and 10.5 degrees, and thanks to modern technology, many drivers now offer adjustable loft settings. With the provided torque wrench, you can easily tweak the loft by up to 2 degrees, ensuring your driver is perfectly tuned to your game.
Shaft Flex
Shaft flex is all about how much and where the shaft bends during your swing, directly influencing your ball flight. Choosing the correct shaft flex is vital for achieving optimal performance. Flex categories include Ladies, Senior, Regular, Stiff, and Extra Stiff. Generally, golfers with slower swing speeds benefit from more flexible shafts, while those with faster swings may require a stiffer shaft to control their ball flight.
Weight Distribution
Many drivers today feature adjustable weights on the clubhead, allowing you to fine-tune your shot shape. If you’re struggling with a slice (a left-to-right curve for right-handers), moving the weight towards the heel can help straighten your shots. Conversely, if you tend to hook the ball (a right-to-left curve), shifting the weight towards the toe can correct this. Moving the weight forward in the head can also enhance distance by reducing backspin, though this makes the driver less forgiving on off-center hits.
Centre of Gravity (CG)
The positioning of the centre of gravity in your driver significantly affects your ball flight. A lower, forward CG can produce lower spin rates, ideal for golfers with high swing speeds who prefer a piercing ball flight. On the other hand, a CG positioned further back will increase spin and launch angle, helping players who struggle to get the ball airborne or who need more forgiveness on their strikes.
Head Size & Profile
Today’s drivers typically max out at the 460cc head size limit, with a few specialized models available at 440cc. The larger 460cc heads are designed to inspire confidence and are generally more forgiving, making them a great choice for newer players. However, not all 460cc drivers look the same at address. Some have a more stretched profile, appearing larger behind the ball, which can boost confidence. More compact profiles, with deeper faces, often offer lower spin rates and are aimed at players with lower handicaps who seek precision over forgiveness.

For those just beginning their golfing journey, budget might be a consideration. If you’re not ready to invest in the latest driver, consider purchasing a model from a previous season.
